Cartagena

The city is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in America and it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Pedro de Heredia founded Cartagena, or Cartagena de Indias, in 1533 and Cartagena is today the most popular tourist site of Colombia. Framed by a beautiful bay, it was the Caribbean gateway port used by the Spanish, where they would store the riches plundered form the interior before they were transported back to Europe. To protect it from the constant attack of pirates and buccaneers, the largest fortification in the Americas was constructed around it. The city was the greatest military square of Latin America. The cultural wealth resulting from the mix of races, its architectural beauty, the sea and the warm evening breeze make Cartagena one of the most fascinating towns in the Caribbean.

Not far from Cartagena you can visit the Rosario coral reef archipelago, magnificent coral islands with amazing underwater gardens and the city of Mompox, declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1995 for the preservation of its colonial architectural features.
